Track Days

Laguna Seca – April 25, 2012 – Lap Time 1:53 & 140mph

Last video from Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, CA. Getting later in the afternoon and the clouds were coming in. In front for the first half of the track is Christian D. A 1:53 lap time isn’t too bad. Pretty happy with the lap overall. Crested over turn 1 at 140mph, fastest for me of the day, according to GoPro.

This completes the track day footage for the day. A small mistake in the morning with a nice rest of the day. Now it’s on to ordering up some replacement parts and fixing her up for the next track day.

Laguna Seca – April 25, 2012 – Lap Time 1:52

Another video from Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, CA. The track is dry and blue skies are out. Looks like my fastest lap of the day at a 1:52. Pretty happy with the lap overall.

I’m not sure who I passed in between out of turn 2 but that sure looks like a Ducati 999 🙂

The guy I passed in between turn 6 and 7 didn’t leave me too much room but we got it done.

Laguna Seca – April 25, 2012 – Lap Time 1:53

After a frustrating crash in the morning, caused by a stupid mistake, I got the bike fixed up and ready for the next session. After a few laps of easy riding, trying to get some heat in the tires, I decided to push it a little harder.

Riding in front of me for the first half of the lap is Christian D. on the white Triumph Daytona 675. Christian came up from Los Angeles and although he is somewhat of a new rider (2+ years), Christian has been going to Chuckwalla Valley Raceway in Desert Valley, CA a bunch. This was his first track day at Laguna and he did awesome!

Laguna Seca – April 25, 2012 – Small Mistake

Biggest lesson never to be forgotten. Damp track or not, cold tires and taking it easy have to go together. I stayed out the first session because the track was too wet. However, on the second session I went out. The track was a bit damp but it wasn’t too bad. On the third lap I got too comfortable and the tires were still very cold and I lost the rear in turn 8a, exiting the corkscrew.

From reviewing the video it sounds like it was a lot of little things that all added up. Turn 8 is the left hand drop off into the corkscrew. Turn 8a is the right hand out of the corkscrew and has less of a decline which loaded the suspension. Add to that a pretty hard lean angle and a little throttle and that spells disaster.

Laguna Seca – April 25, 2012

First track day of 2012 and there is no better place to go than the Monterey Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway. It’s 2.238 miles in length with a 180 feet elevation change. It has eleven turns, including the famous “Corkscrew” at Turns 8 and 8A. The name Laguna Seca is Spanish for “dry lake”. The area where the track is was originally a lake. The course was originally built around the lake, which has since dried up entirely. An artificial pond has since been added.

Infineon – September 19, 2011

Start/finish is where it all begins and your adrenalin begins pumping as you try to put yourself in a good position to enter the left-right combination that becomes Turn 2.

Turn 2 is a deceptive, hard right hand turn; steeply uphill, blind and off-camber as you enter but flattens out as you exit. Several riders slid off track in Turn 2 throughout the day. Great passing zone between before Turn 3…

Infineon Video 1 – September 19, 2011

Here’s the 1st of 2 videos from my trackday at Infineon Raceway. First time at the track in 9 years. Not too bad with a 2:04.29 lap time.

Infineon Trackday Prep – September 19, 2011

My lovely and super wonderful wife, Mackenzie, encouraged me to go to a trackday for my birthday. I haven’t been to a trackday in 7 years, which was at Laguna Seca. I did a trackday in 2003 at Infineon. Which is to say, I didn’t remember the track configuration or race lines at all. The only thing that I remember from that trackday is that I was pleasantly surprised at just how fun Infineon was.
