The Silverstone MotoGP of Great Britain was this last Sunday, Father’s Day so I was unable to watch the race until tonight. Boy am I glad I decided to wait on reading the highlights of the race and just watch the full replay. What a great race, indeed!
With Rossi still out from his injury in Mugello, Lorenzo took pole and shot out immediately leaving everyone in his dust and pulled out as far as 8+ seconds ahead of second place. Even though it wasn’t much of a race for first place, the race behind him was anything but dull. The race for second place early on was a great battle between Dovizioso and De Puniet.
Nicki Hayden was riding brilliantly and was hanging into fourth place sliding his way around corners. One of the most pleasant surprises was how well Ben Spies did in keeping up with the podium race and was waiting patiently in fifth.
With three laps to go Hayden made a move and took over third from De Puniet. Spies followed right behind Hayden and moved into fourth place. Meanwhile, in the back, Stoner got a horrible start off the line and fell back to last place but made his way up the pack to an impressive fifth place.
Back up to the action in the front, Spies was pushing hard to pass Hayden and was taking looks on the inside line of every corner. It seemed almost impossible for Hayden to keep Spies from passing him and with a slight error with a half of a lap to go from Hayden, Spies slipped into third position making it on to the podium for the first time of his rookie year in Moto GP!
Congrats Ben Spies!
